New Quilt Progress

I’m so excited to share my quilt progress on the new project I started at the beginning of this month! I’m using the leftover pieces of my Kaleidoscope Quilt to make something brand new.

If you know me, you know I’m a bit obsessive. These type of projects get me a little hyper-focused. All I want to do right now is sew… but there’s also life – like I need to eat, sleep, etc. I feel very lucky to be in a situation where I do have time for projects like this. I just wish I wasn’t so attracted to things that take so long to make. The gratification of finishing something like this is immense, so I guess that’s the big attraction.

The first thing I needed to do was to organize my fabric pieces. I had all these 10-piece packs already packaged for when I was trying to sell them. They all had to come out of those packs and I reorganized them into new packs for each block I need for this quilt. This needed to be done before sewing started – just so I know for sure I have all the pieces needed in the design!

Stitching

Here’s a close up of the stitching. I use a running stitch and follow the lines that we printed on the back of the fabric. I use knots at the beginning and ending of each stitch line – just in case I need to pull a line of stitching out, it doesn’t affect any other piece. The thread I use is SewFine 50 weight from Superior Threads. I only have this one color at the moment… thinking about getting a dark grey too. Constantly working on keeping my stitches in a straight line.

The seams on these pieces are very unseemly. There is no great way to iron them down and keep the seams tidy. Here is an up-close shot of the front of my stitching, after pressing. In my next post, I’ll show how I do the ironing.

I’m so happy to have this project on these grey days here in Portland. Working with color makes me happy!
