Kaleidoscope EPP Quilt Pattern
- PDF Download Pattern for English Paper Piecing.
This is a large hand-piecing project.
Knowledge of one of the following stitching methods is required:
1. English Paper Piecing with a whipstitch or ladder stitch.
2. Tracing templates with a running stitch and Y-seams.
Five basic shapes are used:
1¼″ 72º Diamonds
1¼″ 36º Diamonds
1¼″ Pentagons
¾″ Pentagons
1¼″x ¾″ Isosceles Triangles
There are (6) quilt size options:
• 98" Circle (5060 pieces)
• 82" Circle (3610 pieces)
• 65" Circle (2290 pieces)
• 48" Circle (1280 pieces)
• 83" x 98" Full Rectangle (5274 pieces)
• 60" x 80" Offset Rectangle (3275 pieces) -version on cover.
Fabric requirements, Piece counts, Piecing Maps for both Full and Partial blocks and Corners included for all six size options.
Templates to copy are also included for both EPP and Tracing methods. However, for ease and speed, I would highly recommend purchasing paper templates from PaperPieces.Com. They also carry the full windowed template set for tracing here.
This pattern is for a quilt top only.
Instructions for hand-stitching methods, adding a border, basting, quilting, making and attaching bias-cut or regular binding are not included in this pattern.
After quilting and adding stabilizing stitches around the edge with a machine stitch, the pieces can be trimmed and bound as usual. Circular quilts will need bias-cut binding.
Option: Add a border, ensuring you stitch inside raw edges - and quilt through all layers.
Option: Appliqué edges down to a backing fabric that is larger than your finished piece.
21 Kona Solid colors were used on the original quilt, manufacturer names are listed for exact match, but any similar colors can be used.
This pattern is a Revision of The Kaleidoscope Pattern Book. In this revision, the full mandala design is fully extended and corners are added for a large version of the cover quilt I originally made. There are added Placement Illustrations to show where each block fits in. This can help figure which blocks you would need to make size alterations of your own. There are also added Connector Marks to show which two pieces to sew together when piecing larger sections.
I used the Tracing Method with a running stitch for the cover quilt. It was important to accurately mark my lines, AND make sure I was sewing on the lines, matching both sides front to back. That's why I would recommend using the acrylic window templates, so those lines stay accurate throughout your project. It will help the quilt lay flat when finished.
